What Computer do you have (vendor, model; specifically mainboard model, CPU, graphics card, ...) and how are you trying to shut it down?

Mh... I don't know, but it sounds like a BIOS problem. Has it worked on an older version of Ubuntu or a different distribution? Or even in Windows?

Wait, logout, too? logout as in, going back to the login screen? If so, it sounds like an application problem. Have you tried closing ALL applications before logging out? Can you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old?

You can use sites like http://pastebin.com/, but don't forget to go through the log first and see if there is sensitive information in it -- anyone on the Internet can read the log! Just scramble the data, but leave the lines as such intact.

Sign in? Uh... try pastebin.ca/upload.php -- it's easier if you just upload the whole thing. By the way, if I can't provide you with an answer, try asking in http://askubuntu.com/. I don't have much time, so I'm slow to answer.

Hm, can't discern anything from the log... Say, about what happens when you try to shut down the computer, what do you mean by "cpu continue processing"? Moving the mouse wakes the computer immediately, like if you just had a screensaver on? Or does the screen stay blank and you can't wake it up anymore, while the fans keep running?
