in 11.10 kernel 3.0 does not boot unless with acpi=off, worked fine with 2.6.38 (Natty) and Mavericks default kernel

Just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and now the computer freezes a few seconds after I hit enter in the Grub start menu (the caps lock indicator LED on the keyboard does not react to the caps lock button). I have found out two solutions for this: either boot the old 2.6.38 kernel left over from the 11.04 installation (with default boot options) or add acpi=off to the boot options of the 3.0 kernel. I think both of these options are unsatisfactory because with acpi=off I cannot shut down automatically and 2.6.38 won't be supported forever (I will receive no security updates for the 2.6.38 under Oneiric, will I?). So should I file a bug about this (found no similar bugs from tha last month)? Note that under 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 the computer booted with default options and with no problems. The machine is a Pentium 4 with an Intel mainboard.

When I boot the 3.0 kernel without acpi=off, then it seems to me that no messages are written into the syslog at all. If I boot 3.0 with the recovery option, I see some kernel messages on the screen and then it freezes.

I suggest you report a bug with ACPI, you can run:

ubuntu-bug acpi

To start the process. I suggest you make sure you have the latest BIOS too, there may be ACPI fixes.

Same bug with me I have posted a a bug report. If I turn off Hyper Threading in the bios I can run kernel 3 if I don't well panic.

I had this same problem, after doing some digging around I found a workaround that allows booting the 3.0 series kernel without having to disable ACPI or Hyperthreading. The workaround involves adding a kernel parameter to your GRUB configuration:

   processor.nocst=1

This forces the kernel to use an older method of determining the processors 'c-state' (don't ask me what exactly that is, I have absolutely no idea, all I know is adding this to my GRUB configuration allowed me to finally boot without disabling ACPI or Hyperthreading on my D865GLC board (apparently this bug is prevalent on Intel D865GBF boards, the GLC is basically a mini-ATX version of the GBF and even uses the same BIOS)).

Rough System specs:
CPU: 2.8ghz Pentium 4 w/hyperthreading
Board: Intel D865GLC (from a Gateway computer, but flashed with newest Intel BIOS), board revision unknown
RAM: 2x 1Gb DDR & 2x 512Mb DDR
Video: nVidia 7600GS 8X AGP w/512Mb Video Memory
