ALT F2 works and I can log in to terminal
ALT CONTRL DELETE also works to reboot.
At the outset what flashes before me is the screen of EDUUBUNTU and soon I get

*Starting blue tooth
*Pulse Audio configured for peruser sessions
*Saned disabled;edit/etc/default/saned

I ALSO GOT

*Starting CUPS printing Spooler /server
*Checking battery state
*Stopping System V run level compatibilty

When I press ALT CONTRL DELETE

*Checking battery state
*1xc init script disabled;edit /etc/default/1xc
   acpid: exiting
*stopping bluetooth
  Checking for running unattended- upgrades
*Asking all remaining process to terminate
*All processes ended within 1 second
Modem manager [532]:<info> caught signal 15 Shutting down
Deconfiguring network interfaces
Deactivating swap
Will now restart

I would be obliged if you could look in to it and guide me to safety.
Regards
Abdul

I have been able regain the desktop and get started with ubuntu 11.10 again.Amazing desktop features! But the problem that I come across right now is the absence of SYSTEM,PLACES,APPLICATIONS and the SHUT DOWN ICON on the panel. What I see on the left of my screen is launcher icons for DASH HOME,HOME FOLDER,FIRE FOX BROWSER etc.It is not possible for me to shut down as I did in the previous version. Can I bring them back on my panel?

Shutdown is in the menu in the top right icon. You can install the package gnome-session-fallback and select that from the session menu when you first login and you should be ok

@Abdul
- I'm using Ubuntu along Win 7
- problem started after recent upgrades
- right now my problem is Ubuntu won't boot to desktop, or anywhere further past "*Saned disabled;edit/etc/default/saned" as OP stated already

Additional note:
I got rid of error messages related to upgrades unable to be downloaded by commenting out all entries in the sources.list file. sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade gives 0 / 0 / 0, so it won't get in our way and we can forget about it.

Please, let someone pick it up and provide at least some initial instructions. There is sufficient amount of details already.
