my computer freezes how do I fix the problem

when on my computer sometimes my computer freezes but the odd thing is I am able to move the mouse around. Everything in the background is frozen I cant click anything or even when I hit the power button nothing happens. I am completely helpless I have to resort to pulling out the battery to restart my computer.

is it some kind of error or hidden rootkit that causes this problem

how do i test it I rember how to look at it on windows
but what do I do in ubuntu

Hold shift at boot and choose memtest....
