Kubuntu Natty Crashes at random
I've asked this on Ubuntuforums.org and haven't got any replies.
I've been running Kubuntu Natty for quite some time. I have also suffered with a fairly random crash where the computer just dies completely and restarts. There is no "crash report" dialogue, as you get with some software bugs in Kubuntu, the computer just died completely. I have looked through log files and also I've run memtest overnight, which does not indicate any errors.
I've tried overloading all four cpus; temperature went much higher than I've ever seen it normally - something like 80C and it didn't crash. So I don't think it's a temperature event.
I can't see anything in the event logs. But every so often I can be away from my desk and the machine's back at the login prompt (I don't use a screen saver) so it must have crashed and rebooted.
It would be helpful if someone could tell me how I might be able to narrow this down.

Does it happen as all users? Are there particular apps which make it crash?

I only ever log in as one user, there are no others. I can't identify a specific app that causes the crash. Normally I'm running google chrome, dolphin, firefox and not much else.

You can make thousands of users on your system so "there are no others" is a moot statement

I can leave it overnight, sometimes it will crash, sometimes not. Just thought about my answer, it ignores the fact that there's loads of stuff running in the background. Silly me. I'll leave it running overnight and see what happens.

I'm beginning to think it might be desktop effects that are crashing the system. I'll disable them and see if it stops crashing.

There you go! It just crashed. I had just been having a look at the various system logs and it just died. It literally goes to "power down" black screen, i.e. it doesn't show any kind of error message or shut down. When it rebooted nepomuk service stub came up with a crash. I can upload that into a bug report if need be. I'll create a new user now and see what happens.
Here's the crash information:

If the desktop effects are crashing try this:
Go into kde system settings > Desktop Effects
Click the Advanced tab.
Change compositing type to 'XRender' and click apply.
The OpenGL compositing often crashes the netbook's cards, as did mine, but Xrender is much more lightweight.

OK, I'll try that maybe in a day or two, if it doesn't crash when effects are off.

Crashed again while I was out. I will change to XRender and see what happens.

Not convinced it's anything to do with OpenGL as desktop effects were switched off anyway. Does anyone know which log might give us some evidence?

Hello, well, I created the new user and switched off opengl and it crashed this morning while I was out for a couple of hours. How can I get any diags? I'm thinking of going to Oneiric later this week so maybe I should go for it and see what happens? It would be better to find some kind of diagnostic info' though.

Have you tested your RAM using memtest from Grub?

Yes, I mentioned that at the beginning of the thread. Ram memtest overnight and no errors.

I have also kinda the same issue. I upgraded to kubuntu 11.04 (natty) about a month ago and didn't have any issues till today when my machine crashed 3 times. I wasn't running any apps but chrome, Firefox and console. In my case the crash was different from what mebuntu is experiencing. In my case the screen freezes ( the mouse doesn't move) and then after a minute or so mouse starts working but everything else is still frozen (I can move the mouse but can't click or drag anything). And I have to restart the machine.
I tried to find a log file that can give me a clue but couldn't. Can you direct me to the correct log file. I have also switched to XRender to see if it helps and would let you know if it freezes again. I am running an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz, 8Gig RARM, 42Gig Swap. And I am the only user on this machine who has logged in ever.

I confirm that my machine is still crashing. It actually crashed three times today right after each other. However, I know that it is just the UI that crashes. Because I was listening to grooveshark over internet and it didn't stop after the crash. Is there any log file that I can take a look at?

Well, I'll probably have to close this question. I've installed Oneiric today and so I have waved goodbye to Natty. Initial impression is good as always. We'll see if there's still a crash. The annoying issue of not saving my dual monitor setup is still present. GRRR.

It's not really solved but I will not pursue it here.
