Won't boot with cores unlocked

Asked by Scruphy

My system board has a feature called core unlocker. The processor is a quad core amd sold as a duo core, which the system board is supposed to be able to unlock. When I unlock the extra cores ubuntu won't boot from hard drive or cd. The system board is an Asus M4A88TD-M/USB3. Is there any way to use it with the cores unlocked?

Do you know if any other operating system will successfully boot on that computer, with all 4 cores unlocked?

The Windows XP cd will boot the computer, But I didn't try installing it. Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 and Puppy 5.2.5 all hang in the initial startup.

What are you referring to when you say "the initial startup"? What is on the screen when they hang?

It stops with a screen full of text. When I try to boot from a cd the last 2 lines are some numbers followed by:
do_device_not _available +0x10/0x20
error_code +0x67/0x6c

Booting from the hard drive:
sys_read +0x42/0x70
syscall_call +0x7/0xb

I am guessing that you're using the 32-bit version of Windows XP, since pretty much nobody ever uses Windows XP 64-bit under any circumstances. Are you also using the 32-bit version of Ubuntu? (Your chip should be able to run the 64-bit version of Ubuntu and you'd likely get better performance...but if 32-bit Windows is working and 64-bit Ubuntu is not, then perhaps 32-bit Ubuntu would work. That's the one and only idea I was able to glean from http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=57656, which I warn you otherwise seems to be composed entirely of angry, unproductive bickering, but if you check it out maybe you'll see something I didn't.)

Are you still experiencing this problem?

If so, can you provide the information I requested above?

I tried both 32 bit and 64 nit versions of Ubuntu. It made no difference which I tried.

You could convert question into a bug, to reach some programmer.

That seems like a good idea...though it would be hard to show that the bug occurred on normal, properly working hardware. In any case, I encourage you to do this, but please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully first so you know what an Ubuntu bug report is expected to contain, and please also open a Terminal window in a live CD or installed Ubuntu system and run

apport-collect BUG-NUMBER

after converting this into a bug (replace BUG-NUMBER with the bug number), to automatically attach potentially useful information from your system. Of course, you'll have to run this when booted with your third and fourth cores locked, since you cannot boot with them unlocked; you should make sure that it is clear in the bug report (you can always edit it or post comments to accomplish this) that the apport-collect data were submitted while running with your CPU has a dual-core processor.

It would be especially useful--and more likely to actually be attended to by a developer--if you were to test this with an Oneiric daily-live and (after verifying that this problem still occurs with Oneiric...perhaps it doesn't) run apport-collect in the live (or installed, if you prefer) Oneiric system. Daily lives are available at: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Can you help with this problem?
