My memory is limited

Asked by John Smith

I am running a Duel Booted Windows Xp Home Edition/Ubuntu computer. I have ~70 GB left, but on Ubuntu, I only have access to 12 GB. Is there any way to fix this?

Is this actually a dual boot installation, or a Wubi install? 12GB is the default for a Wubi install and I suspect you've done a Wubi install (where you can uninstall Ubuntu from within Windows). If this is the case I'd recommend you set up a true dual boot system by Booting off the LIveCD and running the install.

* You really MUST backup all the important data in Windows and in the Ubuntu Wubi.
* Make sure you have the Windows install disks also - just in case
* Next uninstall Ubuntu from Windows (under add/Remove programs) because you won't need it
* You should run chkdsk on the drive to make sure there are no errors, otherwise the partition resize can fail and you can lose all data on the Windows partition.
* Then Boot off the Ubuntu Live CD and select "install alongside"

You should be prompted to select the size for the Ubuntu partition. The installer will then set about resizing your Windows partition and setting up the Ubuntu one to your specifications. Please note that this can take some (considerable) time because it has to move all your data so that it will fit in the resized partition. Do not interrupt this process once it has started.

If you get stuck or have other questions, there's some community documentation here:
