11.04 randomly gets black screen with scrolling hex stuff

Asked by Dick

get black screen with scrolling hex white stuff. I can usually get back into firefox screen by moving the mouse all over the screen to get my original screen back. Gets same thing with firefox or chrome.
It appears to be a "TERMINAL" screen that takes up the whole window.

Usually cannot shutdown using the shutdown option - just hangs - so I have to press power off.
