max amount of memory recognized by Ubuntu 32 bits

Asked by Larry Harvey

I dont have a prob but more of a question. Just installed Ubuntu and am wondering if, like windows xp, there is a limit of total recog installed memory? If so what is it.
I currently have 4gig and as im sure you know is more than what xp can recog and utilize so whats above that xp limit is in my mind kind of going to waste.
Thanks for your time

4GB is a lot of ram; you really are unlikely too need that much.

If you are running a 64 bit machine, then you do not need to do anything; this should be recognised.

If you are running a 32 bit machine, then you need to install the PAE kernel to use more than 4GB memory; you can do this after you install ubuntu -- its not hard.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel (look for the PAE section).

Thanks. I am not able to locate any of the specs for Ubuntu and I know very little about it.
