Mouse freeze then system freeze

Asked by Geoffrey Van Horn

Hello all.
I have installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.10. It is fully patched as of yesterday. Randomly, my mouse will stop working, then when I try to bring up the console to do a soft reboot the entire system will become unresponsive. I am using an iHome mouse, but tried with a logitech mouse also and have the same issues. I reinstalled the operating system, and it did not solve the problem. Sometimes itll happen 10 minutes after booting, sometimes 2 hours, its quite frustrating. I am dual booting with windows 7, and have absolutely no issues with the windows install, so I doubt its a failure do to hardware. Any help would be appreciated.

System specs:
Amd Athlon X2 4200+ dual core
2gb Corsair DDR 400
Nvidia GeForce 8800GT
Linksys Wireless - G Pci card

Could it possibly be a driver issue? All of the drivers seem to be functioning properly though. If you need any more information feel free to ask.

Thanks in advance.
-Geoffrey

Yes it certainly could be a driver issue. I have to use the Nvidia driver for video, or my mouse is frozen after a screensaver kicks in. Go to the System/Administration/Addition Drivers and activate the Nvidia driver (current or recommended) one.

Right now, I am using the recommended driver for my video under the addition drivers.

Are you saying you were not using the Nvidia driver, and just turned it on to try it? If you have been using it and have the freezes, better open up the question, I have no other suggestions, other than dropping back to 10.04, which did not display the problem for me.

To know if issue is related to X11 (graphic server), could you type, when mouse is frozen, Ctrl+Alt+F1. You should get a terminal using whole screen (in fact, you leaved temporarily X11). Typing Ctrl+Alt+F7 will switch GUI to X11.

When the mouse freezes, I try to use ctrl+alt+f1 and it completely freezes the rest of the operating system.

So it looks not to be a X11 issue. Sorry, but I have to leave. I will try to have a look tomorrow.

Instead of hardreset try MagicSysRq.

Actually remove the driver which isn't in use.

In the meantime if on, turn off visual effects.
system preferences -> appearance -> visual effects = None
