Fatal modprobe boot report

Asked by Peter Smith on 2011-01-03

I have almost exactly the same problem as James B Murphy (2010-10-23) except that my file report is for 2.6.35-24, ie error report on the Grub screen before successfully loading into Ubuntu 10.10:

'modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-24-generic-pae/modules.dep:
No such file or directory'

I tried actionparsnip's suggestion (I entered 'sudo depmod -a' after the flashing cursor after booting into Ubuntu Recovery mode and scrolling to 'Root') but it hasn't cured the problem.

It could be I didn't follow his advice as he intended or that the solution is ineffective for this file. Any suggestions please

Switch to tty and try:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.35-24-generic-pae

Also unplug any usb stick or drive.
Connect via ethernate cable instead of wireless.

However it's a known bug (as linked above), incl. some workarounds you may try e.g.

comment #113
Also note
comments #145

In the meantime you may try previous or mainline kernel.
Worse case - reinstall.

Sum.
It might be a race condition.
Workaround (without warranty; note comment #145):
gksudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf

## Change the line
MODULES=most

## to
MODULES=dep

## Save the file and run:
sudo update-initramfs -u

Many thanks Sam, advice worked (once I'd found the 'Terminal' ~ very much a novice as I've only had Ubuntu running for a short time as dual boot wouldn't work until I got Easy BCD).

Happy New Year

Peter

Thanks Samantha (aka Sam), that solved my question.

Tried same ting, didn't work
However, I noticed that when running the "sudo update-initramfs -u" command , the error-message mentioned

 "FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35.25-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory

This is correct and may be cause of the error since the folder names do not match with the actual folder name which is

 "2.6.35-25-generic" (a dash - between 35 and 25 in stead of a . period)

Is this the cause of the error?
