Problem in adjusting the screen brightness in Acer Aspire 5740

Asked by Triyambakesh

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (Linux 2.6.32-24 Generic) & My system is Acer Aspire 5740 core i5. The actual way for adjusting screen brightness is by pressing Fn and Left < & Right > Keys. Doing so, I find a display of decreasing and increasing of brightness on screen but the actual brightness remains the same! Please help.

Hey guys,
I have a 5740 with the i5. I too was having issues with the brightness. I solved it by using the kernel on Mostafa Kamal's PPA:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kamalmostafa/linux-kamal-i915bri/ubuntu
If you don't want to use that kernel "acpi_osi=" in grub worked also but Kamal's kernel also fixed the "P" button on the computer.

May also help:

Hi guys,

The problem towards my Acer Aspire 5740-core i5, LCD screen brightness got solved. thanks to Kamal Mostafa for his valuable support. All you need is Maverick series of Ubuntu. Then follow the instructions at Kamal Mostafa webpage towards adding PPA. Update properly for Gnome-Power-Manager installation. Reboot. Refer "https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight". Then for adding "acpi_backlight=vendor", refer "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks"------ "HotKeys part of Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 Lucid". Follow the commands in terminal. Reboot. See the miracle!!

Thank you.

I've linked this question to bug #568611, because that is where all the issue discussion is. I had exactly the same problem with Acer TravelMate 5335 (Intel GMA 4500MHD), and it was mostly fixed by Kamal's PPA.
