Ubuntu 10.04 not recognize SATA WD-Blue 500 GB ASUS A8V-MX

Asked by Pedro Angelo Simões Camin

I can't install Ubuntu 10.04 at desktop with motherboard ASUS A8V-MX. The Ubuntu 10.04 Live version recognize all the devices and I can access the Internet normaly - everything is OK - but when I try to install I can't the message is something like "SATA not attached" - with WD-Blue 500 GB, with WD-Green 500 GB or Seagate 500 GB. I had tried yet Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntustudio 32 bits and 64 bits with no success. And I had tried to install with WUBI at SO WIndows Vista installed normally (by now at WD-Blue 500 GB). In that desktop I have a CentOS 5.5 installed normally (Seagte 500 GB). My problem is with that desktop and the Ubuntu. Does Ubuntu 10.04 support ASUS A8V-MX? Sorry, but English is not my native language...

Trying the other Ubuntus is completely futile if one doesn't work. The only difference is the desktop and the default app selection. Under the hood they are EXACTLY the same.

Can you boot to the liveCD and run:

dmesg > ~/out123.txt; gedit ~/out123.txt; rm ~/out123.txt

What is output?

Can you also see the disk / partitions in the output of:

sudo fdisk -l

If you have web access in the liveCD you could try:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get --reinstall install gparted ubiquity

to upgrade gparted and ubiquity (the installer app) from the repos. You may need some boot options to get the drive detected properly

I did what you had suggested, so...

*** see the disk / partitions in the output of:sudo fdisk -l

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

And, that is the problem... Ubuntu Live not find a HD attached... even if I use only gparted - same answer - blank, nothing, no HD attached...

But, I installed one of the HD 500 GB "not recognized" - the WD-Green 500 GB - in a USB case and plug it...

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

Disco /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Unidades = cilindros de 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Identificador do disco: 0x362b7e9d

Dispositivo Boot Início Fim Blocos Id Sistema
/dev/sda1 * 1 60801 488384001 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Why this HD now is recognized it's a misterious to me... I'm gonna try to install the Ubuntu and see what happens...

If it is needed the other answers I can send them all, but it is quite big...

Well, thank you! So...

***** ... boot to the liveCD and run:
dmesg > ~/out123.txt; gedit ~/out123.txt; rm ~/out123.txt
What is output?
