I have a Dell Mini-9 with Ubuntu 10.04 UNR. Under the System menu choose Power Management.
Here are my settings:
On AC Power: under Actions my two choices are Put computer to sleep... Never, When laptop lid is closed... Suspend, Spin down hard disks...unchecked; under Display Put display to sleep...30 minutes, Set display brightness...100%, Dim display...unchecked
On Battery Power under Actions: Put computer...Never, When laptop lid...Suspend, When battery ...Shutdown; under Display put display to sleep when ...10 minutes, Reduce backlight.
General: under Actions: When the power...Ask me, When the suspend...Suspend, Notification Area: select Always display an icon.
Anyway this works for me--sensible choices or not. Perhaps a setting on yours is causing a problem. Otherwise I don't know what the issue is.

While I wouldn’t say affiliate marketing is entirely residual, it does provide somewhat of a passive income source. Meaning, the amount of money I make is not tied to my time.
I don’t get paid by the hour, I get paid per sale, and since my websites are working 24/7/365, sometimes I sell things and make money using affiliate programs while I’m sleeping. Waking up in the morning only to see I’ve made money overnight is a feeling that never gets old.
Take a look http://

Subject: I was confused too
Feelings about money are hard to work around. The 65K in cash gives you a feeling of security -- I get that. **BUT** you have a huge gaping wound with $112K in debt, and you aren't willing to open up that clean bandage of your cash reserves, thinking maybe some other ambulance has gauze that will take care of you. You are bleeding and in shock. That feeling of certainty about needing the house and the money in cash? That's the adrenaline and other stress hormone talking --
**Who else potentially will take care of your student loans?** Job?? Government forgiveness program?? Significant other?? Some people do make that work, but only by making plans for that. It never just falls into your lap.
**25-year repayment plan for these loans??** Is that really the length of the repayment term? I understood student loans to have a 10-year plan, but will confess I'm not an expert.
**Relocation timeline** You say you will moving shortly after graduation. You mention the chance of getting an academic position after some other lab? bench position with luck in 5 years. Will the academic position likely entail relocating? If you buy a house in 3 years and then have to relocate, you may have to sell the house at a loss or refuse the position. Is there a chance your marital status will change during these next 5 years? Is that why you are pushing for a house? When you are sure that you are in a "perm" job where you plan to stay for 7-10 years, then think about getting a house.
**paying house in cash or through private sale?** Will a bank approve you for a mortgage with that amount of debt hanging over you? Yes, you have a significant downpayment but will the monthly housing costs and your other monthly debt equal 36 and 0.25. Investing money into paying your debt is a sure thing. You can calculate exactly what your return will be when paying debt - you just use the interest rate of the loan. **You would have to find something that guarantees a return of 7 before PF gurus would say "use the money for investing, not debt repayment"** A house can't guarantee a return of 7
**This is not ALL or NOTHING** You have five loans. Can you see your way clear to merely repaying one in full? See if that feeling of crushing debt depression lifts when saying I now have 4 loans, and last year I had 5. I earned an 8
