Bug Description
Downloaded 2.6.24-20-generic kernel updates today (Pre-released updates-Hardy proposed). After these packages were installed, I restarted and on boot the computer hangs after showing "Starting up..." in the upper left corner of the monitor. Others report the same problem in the Ubuntu forums.

Seems to be related to the 32 bits architecture and/or AMD CPU.

Same problem here, AMD Athlon XP 2600+.
Since this problem only seems to occur on older CPUs, could it be that this kernel package was compiled with some newer instruction set turned on, like SSE2?

Well my board has no nforce but a via chipset:

Mistakes happen but I thught that was onlly reseverd to Microsoft.
Rant aside since this is a critical and known issue should be withrawn from servers and auto porposed nupdates ASAP until proper fix is availabel.
Same is true wit RT versions of kernel in fact no flavour of linux that will install the proposed 2.6.24-20 wll work...
I know we can always revert to the previous kernel but lets be realistic here.

I agree that this was a blunder, and probably shouldn't have happened. But keep in mind, this was in the Proposed Updates repository. These updates aren't meant to be considered official updates. Proposed Updates is a testing bed to catch these kind of problems before they hit mainstream.
If you want a perfectly stable Ubuntu, then don't use unstable untested software, and stick with the standard update repository
Chris Coulson (chrisccoulson) wrote : | #72 |
I agree 100% with what Ripps818 says. This update only went in to hardy-proposed, which is a testing repository for updated packages. hardy-proposed is aimed at people wanting to test updated packages, and is designed to catch problems like this. The only users affected by this problem are those who have explicitly enabled the hardy-proposed testing repository, and not the general user base. People running hardy-proposed should be prepared for occasional breakage like this (as is the case with running the unstable branch)

OK! I BELIEVE I LOCATED THE PROBLEM!!!
Everyone with this problem try this.
UNINSTALL NVidia or ATI drivers that I'm mutch sure you installed using EnvyNG. Then reinstall the latest 2.6.24-20 kernel and reboot.
Then you can add your restricted drivers again by using EnvyNG.
I'm 99% certain that EnvyNG is the culprit for our problems.
Taylor "Ripps" LeMasurier-Wren (ripps818) wrote : | #74 |
@Peter Velkovski:
Nope, sorry. I'm not using any propreitary drivers. I'm using the opensource Radeon drivers.
Also, I find it highly unlikely that any video drivers are the culprit, since they are loaded as modules later in the booting process. Most of us can't even get past the initial CPU check.

For more than 3 months now some people have been complaining about ununtu's 2.6.24 kernels causing random freezes to a few systems (see the many threads that come out googling for hardy + freeze). This particularly nasty bug is still unfixed.
It was noticed that 2.6.25 kernels did not have the issue. Conseqently the porting of a 2.6.25 kernel to hardy was asked many times (for instance see ubuntu brainstorm).
However, porting a 2.6.25 kernel to hardy was always excluded as a "big jump in the dark" in spite of most major distros and a huge number of users using it routinely. It was said that the right way to go was to backport pieces of 2.6.25 as patches to 2.6.24.
And now we have this incident proving that also the cherry-picking is no less a jump in the dark. At this point please rethink the kernel policies and let ubuntu follow the normal kernel updates provided by kernel.org. Or please, do it at least whenever moving to a well tested plain 2.6.x.y is easier than trying to patch-again an already very-much-patched and only-tested-

same problem. Will the kernel that Tim refers to coming out in a couple of days get auto updated while I am running on 2.6.24.19 or is there something else I need to do to jump from .19 to .21 ?
BTW I had installed eclipse and it is not to be found anymore (says its not installed after I boot with 2.6.24.19) - is this normal for programs to be tied to the kernel and distribution (I thought they should not be). Will a fresh get of the program conflict with any future kernel update ?

(I am thinking about making debian productive in autumn with next additional net- or subnotebook... to not only rely on ubuntu... I found openSolaris, fedora, openSuse or sabayon all not that usable than ubuntu...)... better to put the most current kernel.org kernel into "proposed" and then test that than a patch of a patch of a patch of something old... (e.g. rebuilding nvidia drivers etc. is sometimes required anyway with updates...) BUT: it felt like the versions 17 to 18 where more "performant" but on a marginal <= 50ms (?) latency on normal load) base...
Still one thing: nobody tells me, except "Try this patch" - what it MEANS how to look into the matter etc. remains obscure here. Is that only reserved for the brightest experts? Why must such a message than a "hlt" one be so "unexplained"? Does anyone know where to get a better EXPLANATION of what happened?
And a yes, the 2.6.24-20 from Tim Gardner does break my sound support. A shame, was the old notebook my preferred way of watching simpsons while surfing before the evening --- I'm back to .19 and wait for 2.6.25 something... which is sad, I wanted to give the old notebook away as a gift.. as much up to date as possible... still better than no pc at all for some, right?
Mark Grandi (markgrandi) wrote : | #125 |
someone said that the newest kernel missed a commit or something that fixed a problem with the kernel calling RDST (acronym is most likely wrong) or some other cpu instruction, and all the people having the problems were cpus that dont have that instruction so the cpu locks up
the explanation is somewhere in this huge bug report, i just cant look through it right now
Grizzly (sven-witterstein) wrote : @Stephan Banhard, Tim Gardner | #126 |
Yes I read that with the missing instruction on wikipedia (en.wikipedia.
"This instruction was not formally part of the X86 assembly language at Pentium and was recommended for use by expert users or System Programmers only (Intel reference required). Pentium competitors such as the Cyrix 6x86 did not always have a TSC and may consider this instruction illegal. Use of this instruction in Linux distributions precludes Linux from booting where the CPU does not support RDTSC"
How it relates to "hlt" I cannot figure out (yet)
Now I have the .21 kernel and in total 10 packages updatet (headers etc.), a last try installed via deb line on Tim Gardners (? kernel image?) repo and audio is back, uname -r shows but now I have a bunch of boot-up warnings (shall I post dmesg or sth. else?) and usb-mouse on the single usb-port is sluggish...
Again, falling back to .19 for the time being.
Oh no, the boot messages about ata problems and whatever appear now in BOTH kernels (-21 and -19...)... looks like a reinstall candidate...
Suggestion: can we not introduce categories to a bug, wiki-style, so that "me too" and hardfacts can be separated/modified? I'll put that to "help improve lp" after thinking (or somebody do it) (over for now)

I believe these failures are AMD CPU bound sine I hav e tested 15 machines and 4 of which are MAD and those failed.
On another note intrepid loads ok

2.6.24-20.38 fixes the Error 18 when boot, but I get "Error 16: Inconsistent filesystem structure" and stop booting.
2.6.24-19 works fine.

Xanax - You have a separate issue and should open a new bug report

My nvidia driver is also not recognised (AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with a
GeForce 5200FX video card, if that matters) on the latest
2.6.24-20-generic.

Can you confirm that the -20.38 version fixes the regression? Thank you!

This kernel (-20.38) now works for me. I'm using it as my default kernel from yesterday.
Mossroy (mossroy) wrote : | #158 |
The booting regression is solved for me, but 2.6.24-20.38 kernel gave another regression for some of us : the display falls back in low-resolution (graphics safe mode). Maybe it's https:/
Looks like it's related to nvidia cards only.
David Planella (dpm) wrote : | #159 |
I experiency exactly the same issues as the previous poster.
Petar Velkovski (pvelkovski) wrote : | #160 |
Ok, just to be clear. I had to reinstall nvidia drivers with EnvyNG every time i changed kernel. From 2.6.24-16 -> 2.6.24-17, 2.6.24-
David Planella (dpm) wrote : | #161 |
Regarding to the previous post, I have never had to reinstall the nvidia driver, which is the one available from the -restricted-modules package. It has seamlessly worked throughout all kernel updates until -20. I have never used EnvyNG nor did I know what it was until I googled for it.
Krzysztof Janowicz (janowicz) wrote : | #162 |
i have exactly the same problem, the system hangs when trying to start X (only showing the nvidia logo). switching to the nv driver does not solve the problem. i switched back to -19 for the moment.
Shaun Crampton (fasaxc) wrote : | #163 |
I just tried -21. It seems to work fine. I have an NVIDIA gfx card and it booted into X at my normal resolution.
Sergei Andreev (seajey) wrote : | #164 |

Im marking this as confirmed, as i get the same exact bug.
im also uploading a picture of what i get when i try to run in recovery mode, as it doesnt even start up far enough to start writing to the log file.
