I downloaded and installed the i386.debs you posted at http://people.ubuntu.com/~smb/bug251344/ and still get the same result when rebooting.

Hardy 8.04.1 desktop-i386
MachSpeed Viper V4DP M/B, w/Via KM400 chipset
Sempron 2500+ processor
Sapphire Radeon 9600XT running ATI Catalyst 8.7 driver
