I've reproduced the original problem then been running proposed kernels in bionic and focal now for at least 2 hours, and problem seems fixed:
root@machine-1:~# uname -r 4.15.0-176-generic root@machine-1:~# cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=18.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=bionic DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS" root@machine-1:~#
5.4.0-108-generic root@machine-2:~# cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=focal DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS" root@machine-2:~#
Marking as verified in bionic - should we be doing so in focal too?
