7.10 Installer hangs on Compag nx9105

Asked by khiraly

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.15

Hi!

Im unable to install ubuntu 7.10 on my HP Compaq nx9105 laptop. The installer starts, but it hangs when tries to switch to
nativ(?) resolution.
I have tried the "Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode" but didnt helped, it hangs the same way.
Here are some photos, the laptop dont answer to the keyboard (caps lock), so I assume its hard freeze.

Sometime it freeze just before this:

I have read the help menu, but unable to boot in the:
rescue
live-expert mode
simply because it does not exist. (failed to boot the kernel image).
The exact graphics controller:
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go 32M] (rev a3)

I used debian on this laptop the past two years or so. My main winchester almost died
(it is horribly slow, to boot into linux takes from 30-40 minutes), so I wanted to
try ubuntu, OR copy my old winchester to the new one. However on this ubuntu installer there is
no text mode. So it hangs in every way.
(the installer complain about the broadcom 4306 wifi card too. I used this wifi card with the bcm43xx.berlios.de driver)

My question is:
How is it possible to install ubuntu on this computer?

Please let me know if You need some additional information.

Best regards,
 Khiraly

Thanks for your report. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report and subsequently we are closing it converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you're having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you're unsure that they're genuine bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Installer bugs are to be filed in the "ubiquity" source package. If you conclude that the bug is genuine, please file it in this package later on. For help on finding the right source package when filing bug reports, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FindRightPackage .

Correction: the last link should be https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage .

Correction: your issue is unrelated to Ubiquity; I've reassigned it to the kernel. Sorry for that.

Can you help with this problem?
