Is bug #249953 the same bug?
Also, after switched to kernel 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP, although I could still observe several defunct gzip processes during language-support configuration, but the whole configuration can finish successfully and automatically, and any defunct gzip process disappeared at last.
