This problem is partially fixed for me:
- on my 64bit partition (fresh install of gutsy), this problem doesn't affect me
- on my 32bit partition (fresh install of feisty, upgraded to gutsy), I no longer receive a "can't access tty" error, but the initramfs shell still appears (hitting ctrl+D resumes the normal boot process). I'm not sure whether this is just a remnant of feisty, or whether the problem only affects 32bit installs (at least on my machine - Acer Extensa 5220)
