I am having the same issues.
Attached is my dmesg output for Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. Brandon Hale of the Ubuntu Laptop Testing Team has the same laptop.
Same issues whether using the stock 386 or 686 kernel.
I'm going to test it out using this command: echo 2 > /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate
