Inspiron 1501 VGA output not working

Asked by jobsonandrew on 2007-05-26

Hello,
I have Ubuntu 7.04 installed on a dell inspiron 1501 laptop with the following graphics chip onboard:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]
and If I plug a monitor into the vga output at the back of the laptop, i get nothing on that monitor.. The laptop's screen works fine, and from what I can tell all drivers are installed correctly... However, what may be of use is the output of the command: "aticonfig --query-monitor":
  Connected monitors: none
  Enabled monitors: none

I have attempted to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf but I don't want to change anything without knowing what im doing, ive already had to revert to a backed up version of the file because the machine failed to boot correctly... Has this problem been solved with this particular laptop/graphics card? Is it possible? if so, how?

Thanks

I don't think that there is a problem. It is simply a matter of configuring xorg.conf correctly.
To be sure, in your lspci listing you should have an entry like this:

01:05.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M] (Secondary)

Or very similar to this. Is it so?

jobsonandrew (jobsonandrew) said : #2

no, I do not have a secondary display controller shown like this..
My xorg.conf file looks like this:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

A possible problem with the fglrx identyfing your card?

From xorg.conf
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]
BusID "PCI:1:5:0"

From lspci
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

!?

jobsonandrew (jobsonandrew) said : #4

Ah yes, I didnt notice that, is there a way to correct this?

Cesare Tirabassi (norsetto) said : #5

Try changing all instances in xorg.conf of:

ATI Technologies Inc RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]

to:

ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

I think you should also check what Xorg.0.log reports about what fglrx finds and loads.

jobsonandrew (jobsonandrew) said : #6

How can changing the identifier of the device in the xorg.conf file make a difference? do I not need to add more 'screen' sections or 'device' sections?

I dont know what I'm looking for in the Xorg.0.log file.. do you know what I should look for in that file? because its a big file...

Cesare Tirabassi (norsetto) said : #7

Why don't you paste it here?

This:

(--) Chipset Supported AMD Graphics Processor (0x5975) found

and this from fglrx-supported.txt: RADEON XPRESS 200M (RS482 5975)

is telling us that your card is correctly identified by fglrx.

But this:

(II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE OEM: ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150

explains why there was a misidentification.

I think it could be a good idea to regenerate your xorg.conf using:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

This time specify fglrx as your drivers.
If you want to customise even more, use this instead:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I think you should also connect and switch on your external monitor during this process.
In case you made some modifications to your xorg.conf you may want to re-include them afterwards.

If after this you still have a problem with your external monitor, come back here and lets try to manually configure it.

jobsonandrew (jobsonandrew) said : #10

Hello again, i did what you said:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

and then rebooted to see if my external monitor would work.. but for some reason my screen resolution was changed to 1024x768 and the external monitor was not working... so I changed the resolution of the screen back to 1280x800 in the xorg.conf file so now it looks like this:

1) OK, and if you run aticonfig now (without any options) it is still not detecting the external monitor?

2) Can we try to rule out an hardware failure?
For instance,if you have a dual boot, you have external monitor working on the other OS.

3) I would also like to investigate if it is a driver problem. Try again with:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

but this time specify ati as graphic card (check that xorg.conf is using "ati" now instead of "fglrx", again you will need to change the resolution to an higher one).

jobsonandrew (jobsonandrew) said : #12

1)running aticonfig doesnt do anything, it just lists what all of the available options are

2)I know the vga output is fine.. i have only had ubuntu installed for a few days and the vga out was working fine in windows xp

3)I changed the driver to ati and rebooted.. all of the text on the desktop and menus was totally garbled and unreadable, and all of the icons were indistinguishable from the fuzzy text, it was by pure chance and my experience from today that I could browse to the correct folder and rename one of my backed up xorg.conf files in order to get the machine back to a useable state.. but it was still like working blindfolded

Thanks for your help with this but im ready to give up, at least for today anyway...
Im more sure that it has something to do with editing the xorg.conf file to include extra 'device' 'screen' and 'monitor' sections.. I just need to understand how to edit the file correctly.. (Why a GUI configuration utility doesnt come with Ubuntu i'll never know.. seems like the people that create Linux distros dont concentrate enough on the things that either always fail with Linux or are hard to do in Linux.. this kind of thing is why people are scared away from Linux when it has the potential to be so good) anyway it's late and I'm ready to tear my hair out

Thanks again for your time trying to solve this problem

Cesare Tirabassi (norsetto) said : #13

Sorry about that. If it ever happens again, just open a terminal (ie. ALT-CTRL-F2) and proceed from there.
If you post tomorrow, we will try to manually configure your xorg.conf.
And wait for xorg 7.3 and gutsy, many changes are coming that will suprise (I HOPE) you :-).

SOLVED! :D well, sort of

I tried a different monitor! this time a grotty old 19" CRT.. I thought Id plug it in and have another go at editing xorg.conf but as soon as the Ubuntu logon screen came on, the monitor just flicked on!! I lept out of my chair in excitement :D.. well nearly :P

Before, I was using a 19" widescreen TFT (ubuntu laptop plugged into VGA, main windows pc plugged into DVI.. monitor has an input selecion option)..I dont really want to think about it too much, (because I spent all day yesterday trying to figure it out) but i think the cable may not have been plugged in properly.. EMBARRASSING!

Ive only been trying to get this to work because 1) Id like to use my laptop with the projectors at the University, and 2) We may be getting a new tv with a VGA input :P
Thanks again for all your help, Cesare Tirabassi, there should be more people like you out there! :) Below is the xorg.conf that works (Thanks again for the help!):
