kernel 2.6.32-7 breaks monitor resolution

Asked by Hein van Dam

The kernel 2-6-32-6 works fine. After upgrading to 2.6.32-7 the monitor resolution dropped to 800 x 600 instead of 1440 x 900. I accepted this for the time being and installed the nvidia drivers. After restart I don't even get the low resolution. However now the 2.6.32-6 kernel gives the same problem!

(Is it possible to uninstall the nvidia drivers from the command line and get the normal behaviour of the 2.6.32-6 kernel back that way or do I have to reinstall the whole system and avoid using the latest kernel?)

Problem is reproducible: installing with the last *.iso gives low resolution with the AMD64 as well as with the x86 versions.

With an earlier version no problem until I try to update (403 files by now) and reboot. Then again low resolution.

An old laptop and a netbook work with the x86 so I guess it is my desktop's video card/monitor rather than the kernel. I will put the question somewhere else.

Manually install the newest nvidia drivers for your system and wait for the bug to vanish.

The fact that the live CD works in low resolution only as well indicates to me that the video card of nvidia is not recognised properly.
