Ubuntu 11.04(Natty) takes too long to boot up

Asked by Xiaolong Cheng

Hello everyone, my Ubuntu takes too much time to boot up. Hope I can find a solution here.

At first I installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS but the network and graphics drivers were missing, so I upgraded to 11.04(2.6.38.8-generic) with all the drivers pre-installed. All things were good up to then.

Then I discovered that the system can only find 4GB ram instead of 6GB on my machine(it's a 32-bit Ubuntu), so I upgraded to a PAE kernel( 2.6.38-8-generic-pae). At this point I found the boot up time of Ubuntu increased a lot! I recompiled the kernel(2.6.39.4) but the problem still exists.

btw, the Grub screen showed up very quickly, but when I chose Ubuntu(2.6.39.4) to boot, there would be a very long time wait before the login screen came up.

Any insights?

How did you upgrade?

1. I re-installed 11.04 upon 10.04. (10.04 erased)

2. to get Physical Address Extension(PAE), I use:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo sudo apt-get install linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-server
$ sudo reboot

3. To upgrade the kernel from 2.6.38.8-generic-pae to 2.6.39.4:
I got the kernel source from kernel.org, and compiled it on 2.6.38.8-generic-pae. And this time i didn't install PAE for 2.6.39.4, all my 6GB ram was usable.

Does it matter how I upgrade? The problem arose when I completed step 2 (PAE upgrade).

I think you've upgraded to the wrong kernel. Current advice for Ubuntu releases later than 9.04 seems to be to use:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-pae linux-headers-generic-pae

You could try it and see how it goes, after uninstalling the server kernels. I actually thought that the pae kernel would be used automatically. Downloading and installing the complete 64bit desktop release would also be an option.
