Upgrade to kernel linux-image-3.13.0-85-generic damages video

Asked by gabrielvc

The installation of linux-image-3.13.0-85 messed up my video. The upper left corner of the screen works fine, but as you get to the right, the images wobble and renders out of sync. Running an old version of the kernel solved the issue, that is why I think this image is the culprit.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04. The computer has an intel card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

This is a video of the situation:

In my Ubuntu 14.04, I am using 3.19.0-58-generic #64. There are no problems with with video.

Running an old version of the kernel solved the issue, that is why I think this image is the culprit. The installation of linux-image-3.13.0-85 messed up my video. These are your statements.

Running 3.13.0-85 is an old kernel. The above statements conflict with each other. Have you tried a newer kernel?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the reply!

1. I have not tried another kernel. In my ubuntu install, which is 14.04, this is the one linked by "linux-image-generic".

2. I wonder if you have the same intel graphics card as I do.

3. I certainly can try another kernel, used to compile it, but with the switch to Ubuntu 5+ years ago lost the interest for that task.

I'd like to hear your advice.

Thanks! Sincerely,

My HP Compaq has Intel Integrated Graphics Q33. On Dell Optiplex GX280, the graphics card is Quadro FX540. Both work fine. I have not changed the kernel. They have changed with updates.

Do you have release Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS?
Check using terminal command.

 lsb_release -a

I have not been able to solve this issue. I have installed several versions of the kernel up to 3.13.0-101 and still have the same problem again and again.

A video of the situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6vF7iRcg6w

Right now I keep using 3.13.0-79-generic, simply because it is the last kernel version in which the screen does not wobble.

I have provided more information about the bug in https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2323317&p=13577126#post13577126

Thanks.
