kernel version vs firmware

Asked by Marcin

Could someone explain why there is so many firmware versions for different distributions? As I uderstand linux-firmware is independent of distribution or even kernel.

Its the same as any package. New firmwares are added to the package. When apt sees a new version in the repos it will be downloaded and installed and add new or updated firmware files as needed.
