does lilo install itself to the MBR?

Asked by qonder

I want to install lilo to the Ubuntu 8.04.1 partition (/dev/sdb2) not the MBR. I intend to dual boot WInXP and Ubuntu and I do not want lilo to install itself to the MBR. I plan to use NTLDR as my boot manager. If I use the Synaptic Package Manager to install lilo, do I have the option where to install it? I ask because the package manager lists mbr package as a dependency.

After installing the lilo package you need to create a lilo.conf (e.g. by running liloconfig) and then run /sbin/lilo to actually install the boot manager. In lilo.conf you can specify where to install the boot manager.

If you install lilo-doc you get a very good manual at /usr/share/doc/lilo-doc/user.ps.gz
