Why is the likewise-open package not in any Ubuntu releases past 12.04?

This is not a bug, just a question about a package that used to be ubuntu's repos. I would like to know what happened to it out of curiosity, and if there is a continuation or fork of it that is FOSS, so I can use that instead of the opaque non-FOSS alternatives.

Thanks for the information! That explains a lot.

Follow up question:

Can you point me to the where you found that bug reference? I don't see any "change log" that references it... AFAICT the easiest way to find it would be to go to the bugs page [1] for the package, click Advanced Search, check the "Fix Released" box AND select "newest first" or "most recently changed" in the drop-down. Is there an easier way?

How I found that information:

On the Launchpad page of likewise-open https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/likewise-open I click in the top right corner on 'view full publication history' https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/likewise-open/+publishinghistory and then open the first line by clicking on the triangle. This gives

To be exact, it is the publication history and not the change log, but you can reach similar information also via the change log:
On the Launchpad page of likewise-open https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/likewise-open I click in the top right corner on 'view full change log' https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/likewise-open/+changelog and the first entry shows "Deleted in trusty-release on 2015-05-05 (Reason: requested by james-page; largely unmaintained, renamed up...)"
Clicking on the version number 6.1.0.406-0ubuntu10 opens https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/likewise-open/6.1.0.406-0ubuntu10 and there you have another link to the publication history for this version https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/likewise-open/6.1.0.406-0ubuntu10/+publishinghistory where can see the same details as above when opening the first line by clicking on the triangle.
