Try booting to root recovery mode and run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get --reinstall install lightdm

It may help

what is btw the difference between logging in into recovery mode , and update via apt-get,
or
just updating everything in the desktop via the update manager, which tells you if there are updates available.

Can you help with this problem?
