Cannot Log-in on User account on 12.04

Asked by Russell Dennis

I upgraded to 12.04 and had a few problems but have gotten most everything fixed. I am still having one problem with my main user account. I can't log into the GUI. Other user accounts have no problem. I can log-in to a terminal window with the user account but I am not able to log-in to the GUI either in 2D, 3D, or recovery console.

I suspect that I have either a corrupt config file or I have a dependency on something that was upgrade in the 12.04 upgrade. I don't know where to start. What log files do I need to review to see the errors? Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be great.

Review auth.log, syslog and /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log.
Move (rename) ~/.Xauthority and restart lightdm.
sudo lightdm restart

Basically the user should be owner with 600 of ~/.Xauthority and ~/.ICEauthority.
Verify sudoers.
