logging in launches xterm, instead of unity

logging in to ubuntu-12.04 normally launches unity. for some reason it now launches xterm, no metacity, no unity. trying to do "unity --reset", and removing all .* configurations does not change this. where this might be stored or how to reset it to the default?

btw, this is only valid for one user. other users still get unity.
Have you tried Unity2D session?

uh, many thanks ... how embarrassing *blush*. on the lightdm login screen there is a little icon above the user name where one can choose the session. it was changed to "recovery console" which is an xterm. changing it back to "unity" is the solution.
