first login with the correct password fails

Asked by Phil Myers

Hello,

the first login with the correct password fails without further message to log in and the login screen comes up again.
Then the login works.
Also on the first login attempt I can see small "faulty" pixels in the upper part of the login screen.
This problem already appeared with the previous version of ubuntu.

Sometimes, after an update, the problem is fixed shortly but it re-appears regularly.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question!

----

I am using UBUNTU 12.04, all updates installed.
My PC: Intel i7-2700K (LGA 1155) on Asus P8P87 Mainboard, 16 GB RAM.

I have never seen this happen to me. I have logged in the first time and it worked fine. I have the Toshiba M55-S139.

Failed login and faulty pixels may be handled as two different issues.
First issue needs review of log files (lightdm, auth, dmesg, bootchart).
Maybe rename ~/.Xauthority , ~/.dmrc and reboot, in case run: dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Second issue may be due to driver or xorg itself.
This will tell which graphics card and driver is in use:
~$ lspci -nnk | grep -i VGA -A2

It's easier when both issues have a package assigned, this way one can review 'answers' and 'bugs' or query specs about known issues in a websearch.
