can't add user containing "." in the name

Asked by Jon Poole

Using Ubuntu updated to the latest version 2 days ago with Apache2 as a web server and want to create users with names relating to domain names such as "www.whatever.com".

The GUI users and groups panel appears to show that incorporating a full stop in the name is acceptable, but won't actually do it. Trying to add the names without the dots works fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks, but that doesn't answer why the GUI panel directly tells me that they are valid characters, but then won't accept them.

Can you help with this problem?
