Login only with guest account possible

Asked by Andree on 2012-02-20

since today i have a problem with my ubuntu machine. yesterday i used my account on my ubuntu 12.04 machine and everything was fine. Today i wasn't able to login into my account but the guest account works. When i log in to the guest account and start a terminal i am able to switch to my account with the su command.
When i try to log in it looks like everything is ok. I enter my password and a black screen appears (for a short time) but instead of seeing the desktop i see the login screen without error message.

I have no clue what to do. Anyone who knows how to solve this problem?

On the login sceen press CTRL+ALT+F1
log in there and run:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME; sudo apt-get clean

Then run:

sudo reboot

Tryand log in there.

thank you actionparsnip but unfortunately that didn't help. Removing the .Xauthority didn't help either.

Any other ideas?

I've found this message in auth.log:

lightdm: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "dreewill"
lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:auth): conversation failed
lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:auth): auth could not identify password for [dreewill]

I figured it out. The problem was a syntax error in .profile

Hi Andree, can you please explain what you did to resolve your problem as I seem to be having the same issue as you did?
