pam authenticate failure for autologin user

Asked by Gatrh Cornelis

Hi support,

been struggling 4 two days to login to ubuntu after upgrade to 11.10. when booting into single user mode and start lightdm in terminal i get the unity greeter screen with 3 accounts: other, my autologin user and guest. after typing my password and logging in the screen flashes and goes back to the terminal. after this whatever i do i get permission denied (changes filesystem to readonly). if i do a normal boot the page goes to the boot splash screen and just loads forever. I've checked the auth.log and it complains about pam_authenticate failure for autologin user. it also complains that it can't find pam related *.so file and gives ' loading faulty module messages'.

Please advise
