How to add chart: Libre Office Writer

Asked by Warren Hill

I have a big table of data (200 rows, 4 columns) which I have used to create an X,Y line graph in Calc. Each of these values is calculated from other values in the same spreadsheet. I now need to put that graph into a writer document. I can use "Insert" > "Object" > "Chart" to create the chart but I can find now way to copy the data across to writer apart from manually typing in all 800 values. I do not want to copy the graph because I need to send the document to someone who may wish to edit the format so the data needs to be embedded, not a link to another document and not an image. How can I do this?

Problem Solved. It looks like copy and paste from Calc embeds the data, not a link unlike Microsoft Office which links back to excel.

Hi Warren

If you want to copy the data from Calc to a table in Writer, open a Writer document and do this:

- Select all the data in the spreadsheet, and do Ctrl-C to Copy

- Move to the Writer document, and do Edit > Paste Special, select 'Unformatted text' and click OK

- Select all the pasted data in the Writer document.

- Do Table > Convert > Text to Table...

- In the Convert Text to Table dialogue you get, select any options you want and click OK

You can copy and paste a chart as a picture by copying the chart (NOT the frame it is in) and pasting it onto the Writer document. However, there will not be any link between the chart and the data in the table.

Hope that helps

Tony
