How could Ubuntu release 11.1o with a usless Libre Office - it takes aat least 20 seconds to open a simple file, as many complainants have stated.
None of the suggested remedies have helped - and what the hell is this orange veil over half my desktop that simply will NOT go away? Ubuntu, I have had you - after seven good years. If you can't release a functional product, DON'T; I had none of these problems with 11.04 or any previous release. This one is a DISASTER.....

Calm down. Ranting achieves nothing...
If you disable the grid plugin the orange thing will go.
Is that your only issue?

Okay, excuse rant. BUT I have done before what you suggested re the orange
panel - it's on the screen as I'm typing this (now I'm on the right hand
side of the page which is okay...and now I'm back with the orange tint -
and nothing has changed. My OTHER complaint was re the agonizingly long
wait for LibreOffice to open even a simple document - 20+ seconds. I have
seen numerous complaints re this already posted - some dated more than six
months ago - but the problem persists. Puzzling thing is, this occurs only
when I click on a document icon, my usual procedure. When I go into
LibreOffice Writer, find my document folder and then open the required
file, BINGO! It opens almost immediately, like it should. So there's the
sum of the problem: if I try opening a file by clicking on it's icon, it
takes the aforementioned 20+ seconds to open. As for this orange
stuff......grrrr. Neither of these problems were present on 11.04 ....
Dispiritedly,
wordsmyth
P.S. I'm using my gmail a/c for this reply, as I'm currently interstate,
but mail to my regular address is fwd. to this one.

P.S. Info I forgot to add that may help: when I click on a doc. icon to
open it, the Libre Office window appears and the orange loading line STOPS
half way - that's the big wait. The doc. file opens about 20 secs AFTER
this.

Did you disable the grid plugin in ccsm?
also try closing all libreoffice apps and run:
mv ~/.libreoffice ~/.libreoffice_old
Then rerun an app, may help

If I open a LO document by double clicking the file in the File Browser, it takes 15 seconds to start. However, any subsequent document is opened in about 5 seconds.

Tony, that's what used to happen for me when I was using 11.04, but since updating to 11.10 it now happens with EVERY file I access from a folder...enormously frustrating!

Action parsnip, do I just paste " mv ~/.libreoffice ~/.libreoffice_old" in terminal, or do I proceed this with 'sudo' or whatever (I'm new to this game)

If you want really fast starting, go Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Memory and check "Enable systray Quickstarter".
There are two downsides to this:
1. LibreOffice stays in memory after first start. This may be a problem if you do not have much memory in your machine and have a lot of memory hungry programs running (like I have Firefox open with a zillion tabs).
2. There is a bug that stops Ubuntu shutting down, if the Quickstarter is running. You have to explicitly close the Quickstarter before you close Ubuntu.

ActionP - tried this. No change.
Tony, I don't have "Enable systray Quickstarter" in tools/memory in my present LibreOffice 3 on Ubuntu.11.10.
Looks like my only solution for this problem is to go back to 11.04 (groan) where Libre worked fine...

You probably do not have the Quickstart module installed. I think you will need to do this in a terminal,
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-gtk
Try that and report back. If it says libreoffice-gtk is already installed, we may have to think again.
By the way, how did you get LibreOffice? Was it installed with the 11.04 update when Ubuntu swapped from OpenOffice to LibreOffice?

You can also install libreoffice-gtk from the Software Centre - just search for libreoffice-gtk.

Thanks, Tony. Installed libreoffice-gtk and now Libre is working just fine. After installation, I checked TOOLS and MEMORY and found the systray box restored. Clicked on this and re-tried - and success! No icon appears on the desktop or Launcher, but this presents no problem. Also, that annoying orange panel has curiously disappeared. Perhaps it's a ghost in the machine, that may re-appear. But I hope not. Thanks again - and to ActionP - for your assistance.
