How to block select using the keyboard in calc.

Asked by Jacques Malaprade

Hi,

I am used to Excel where you can block select a range of cells in a formula by simply moving to the one corner of the range using the arrows and then holding down ctrl+shift and the arrow keys to select the range. This does not seem to be the way it is done in Calc. Could someone please explain how this is done.

It is a bit annoying having to use the mouse to select a range of cells especially if the range is quite large. I am sure there must be a way but have searched and searched to no avail.

Thanks,

Jacques

PS. I have noticed that it works in some formulas and not in other to be able to block select using the keyboard. Why is this? eg of one not working (for me is) FREQUENCY.

I just launched the app and held shift and hit the cursors and the cells were selected and the selection could be changed with the keys.

in A1 I typed:

=sum(

Then used cursors to select a range. Worked fine.

Using LO 3.4.3 in Ubuntu 11.10, for me:

Shift-Arrow Keys - this moves highlight one cell/row at a time

Shift-Ctrl-Arrow Keys - highlight to end of column/row

and for completeness

Ctrl-Arrow Keys - moves to end of column/row

It is possible that you have these key combinations disabled or mapped to something else either at the LO level or at the system level.

Hi Actionparsnip,

It works fine for me when I am not using a function. Try selecting a cell and then open the function wizard and then select FREQUENCY function and next. Select the DATA field and select a cell then try to use the block select using shift and the arrows. This doesn't work for me but maybe works for you. Please let me know.

Thanks,

Jacques
