Here is a handy check list

http://www.hermit.org/Linux/ComposeKeys.html

If you have a Compose key, usually AltGr, you can hold it down and key the sequence in the Compose column

AltGr "e should give ë

but I find that it does not do that with my UK Keyboard, so the alternative is to hold down Ctrl-Shift-u and release, key the Unicode (without the U) and hit Enter

Ctrl-Shift-u, 00eb, Enter gives ë.

Also have a look at

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ComposeKey

That tells me to use Shift + AltGr, release, then "e does give ë.

Thanks for the tip, but the keystroke sequence you suggested didn't work for me. However, your link to the "compose sequence" chart did help. I did a "copy" of the ë from the chart and "pasted" it into my document. Then I could modify the character font type and size and obtain exactly what I wanted. Thanks again.

there's an extension at the openoffice site that lets you do special characters such as these. you might find it helpful. you shouldn't have to look very hard for it, as it's one of the most downloaded extensions.
