Availability of transposing oral words to written in Libre Office

Asked by Deb Veilleux

I am looking for a way to speak words to the Libre Office program and have it type out the words I am speaking. Is this feasible? Is there an application in Ubuntu or in Libre Office itself already which will do what I need to have done?

I don't think there is anything available at present. There are/have been various project to try and provide speech recognition in Linux. If you Google for things like 'speech recognition ubuntu linux' you will see what I mean.

You can try the "simon" project, however i am unsure as to how advanced it will be.

Note that most users are faster typing (when trained) than they are using voice recognition software. This is primarily due to the time it takes to correct a typographical error on a voice recognition program, versus using a keyboard.

There appears to be a PPA (package archive) for ubuntu. If you can launch a terminal, you can try running these commands. I have no experience with this particular program, however this will add the package repository and install the program:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:grasch-simon-listens/simon
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install simon

If you need more instructions on using the program, have a look at the simon wiki
http://www.simon-listens.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Can you help with this problem?
