If you insert the USB device it should mount for you. You will also see the device in the left hand pane in the save dialogue. If you click it, it will set the save location to the root of the partition on the USB device. Failing that, you can use the hidden folder ~/.gvfs which is where removable storages get mounted to and use the subfolder there.

This was most helpful. As the pen drive was not appearing, there must be something else wrong. The pen drive was corrupt. After reformatting, it worked OK.
