LibreOffice 3 taking ages to load a file, even a blank page

Asked by wordsmyth

I have used Open Office for many years, without a problem. But since installing Libre Office 3 on Ubuntu 11.04/64 bit, it takes a frustrating amount of time to load a file - or a blank page : 22secs, to be precise. What is causing this? And why can't I go back to Open Office, which was always reliable? And is there a fix for the problem? Please advise....someone out there? Thank you.

how much memory do you have on your computer? how much free disk space is there? where did you get libreoffice from?

It can be tweaked the same way as OpenOffice by increasing memory and decreasing how many undo steps to remember.

Little tip, go to settings of OOo ====> memory =====> tweak the amount of RAM allocated to program, which is usually 20 Meg and makes it crawl like an irishman on Friday night. I boost mine to 80megs and it is lightening fast >
from there.

It's also still improving and under heavy developement. Everyone is welcome to get involved.

Hi Sam:

Thanks for the response. Have done as suggested - no improvements. When I
boot a file, the LibreOffice progress bar immediately STOPS halfway and
remains there for 22 seconds before progressing and booting the file
requested. Have not modified Ubuntu in any way - Libre came with Ubuntu
11.04. As I'm currently working on a long volume with many chapters, I can't
abide the frustration and will most likely return to Ubuntu 9.10, which had
NONE of these problems - haven't yet mentioned how Libre won't keep
successive page numbers but substitutes others at random. Maddening!

Thanks again, wordsmyth.

Ubuntu 9.10 has not been supported for quite some time, which among other things means that updates are not released for newly discovered security vulnerabilities. Therefore, you should almost certainly not use that version.

Does the problem with Libreoffice happen when you log in as a different user and run Libreoffice? If you do not have any other user accounts, you can create one to test this.

Read the article and comments. Some downgraded java.
Or if you don't need java just turn it off in settings.

Hello, Eliah: Thanks for your advice. Will try this...however, I've discovered that if I go directly to LibreOffice from the Applications menu, and open a file from there - voila! - instant recovery of said file, which is what used to happen when I just opened a file from a folder. So...curious, non? It's easier to open a file from the folder contents when LibreOffice works properly, but I now find I can only open a file by first accessing LibreOffice from the applications menu. But like I said, I'll try your suggestion. Many thanks.

Hi Sam: Thanks for the advice, but I've already switched off Java...

People, I'm running LibreOffice on 11.04 64-bit and suddenly I am getting the same behaviour, no fix, either turning off Java or increasing memory, nothing works. Tried to open locally mounted or nfs files either clicking on the folder or openng i from the menu, the result is always the same. This looks like a bug (#772131).

I've also got trouble with LibreOffice being really slow. Im using a SSD disk and the program itself loads quickly, but when starting to process the document everything grinds to a halt (or close to). This only happens for the first document though. If I already have a open document a new one loads in no time. If I close *all* documents and opens one of the closed ones it still takes "for ever" to open again. It does not matter if this is done from Nautilus or directly from LibreOffice.

Now for the most interesting part. The problem only exist for files located in the users home directory (or sub directory). If loading files from another user account (/home/otheruser) or from a removable unit everything is fast as it should be! A fix would be appreciated.

If someone experiencing bug 772131 can provide the information requested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/772131/comments/14, then work on the bug can continue.

Right now, the technical differences between OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice are minimal, so if removing LibreOffice and installing OpenOffice.org from the installer available at http://www.openoffice.org/ fixes this problem, it seems likely that replacing it with the version of LibreOffice at http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ would be effective too (for those who prefer to continue using LibreOffice rather than OpenOffice.org).

For more detailed information about replacing LibreOffice with OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu 11.04, see http://askubuntu.com/questions/56220/how-to-replace-libreoffice-with-openoffice/56264#56264.
