Ubuntu 10.10 and LibreOffice freeze

Asked by ahambidge

Hello,

I installed LibreOffice on Ubuntu 10.10 and when writing a letter in the Writer it freezes. After rebooting a couple of times I continued to write. On the third freeze up the document was non-recoverable.

Most inconvenient.

Regards,

Allan (:

Hello,

I have tried to report this as a bug using apport and get a message saying that LibreOffice is not a genuine Ubuntu package.

LibreOffice continues to freeze up.

Regards,

Allan (:

Sorry, Allen, I forgot you are running 10.10 and LibreOffice wasn't a supported part of the Ubuntu distribution then. There was only OpenOffice.org. I am running 11.04 which installs LibreOffice.

I don't know if you can fudge it by reporting it as an OpenOffice.org bug. You see, Ubuntu actually used the Go OO distribution of OOo, which was merged with LibreOffice. So in a sense, OOo in Ubuntu is more LibreOffice than OpenOffice.org.

Or you might just be able to report it as an OpenOffice.org bug, then change the package to LibreOffice.

The other option would be to report it on the LibreOffice bug tracker - I'm sure that they have one.

I suppose the 'official' advice should be to revert to OpenOffice.org. Have you still got it installed? Is there any reason why you need to use LibreOffice?

Hello,

Many thanks for your time to reply.

This is a catch 22 situation as I do not want to upgrade to 11.04 and would like to use LibreOffice as it is a lot faster.

However, the freeze ups are unacceptable as I completely lost a document.

I un-installed OpenOffice so will probably just reverse the situation and remove LibreOffice and go back.

Regards,

Allan :)

Hi Allen

Yes, it probably is best to go back to OOo while you are in 10.10. You could, of course, upgrade to 11.04.

You are not the only person to have found that LO crashes now and then in 10.10. I have just seen a comment in question 156715:

"Before upgrading to 11.04, I also used the LO PPA in 10.10 and had performance issues (ex. crashing in certain circumstances) that cleared after upgrading to 11.04."

Tony

PS If this has answered your question, can you please mark it as Solved.

Hello,

I have a laptop that I just installled 11.04 from scratch. The LibreOffice Writer continues to freeze after writing a couple of lines making it impossible to use.

I have reinstalled OpenOffice as this does not freeze.

Hi Allen

As you are now running 11.04, you should be able to report a LibreOffice bug, in the way I described above.

Tony

Can you help with this problem?
