Ubuntu crash when pasting large text from clipboard in Writer/Calc

Asked by Serrano Pereira on 2011-05-09

Ubuntu 10.10
LibreOffice 3.3.2 from PPA

Each time I copy-paste a certain amount of text (e.g. the text block from this page: http://www.geneious.com/default,1246,NGS%20Assembly.sm) into LO Writer or Calc, Ubuntu crashes. With the crash the screen becomes black (as if the X server has crashed) and then the GDM login screen appears. The crash does not happen with smaller texts (up to ~8 lines of text).

I tried to copy-paste from different browsers, including Google Chrome and Firefox. Even pasting in gedit first, and then copy-paste it from gedit to LibreOffice results in the crash.

Anyone have an idea what's causing this? And if this does seem like bug, under which application should I file the bug (LibreOffice, x-server, ...)?

This may be a good bug to file if you can provide a log maybe of the crash. Also include any other details specific to your system and steps in recreation. Can't test at the moment since I'm working on some projects. Not sure if this would fall under LO or Calc, need more information to determine that.
Best of luck,

Thanks for the reply. How do I obtain a debug log for LibreOffice? And I can't use 'ubuntu-bug' to obtain system information because it complains that LibreOffice is not a genuine Ubuntu package.

Serrano Pereira, this issue is unreproducible as copying the whole webpage into LibreOffice Writer on Ubuntu 11.04 non-Unity GNOME shell did not crash it. Before upgrading to 11.04, I also used the LO PPA in 10.10 and had performance issues (ex. crashing in certain circumstances) that cleared after upgrading to 11.04. It is suggested you do the same. :)
