LibreOffice fails to work after Narwhal upgrade

Asked by Andrew Kerr

I upgraded to Narwhal and OpenOffice suite was replaced by LibreOffice suite. However, it won't open and gives an error message.
along the lines of insufficient permissions for .libre. I couldn't locate .libre and decided to remove LibreOffice and re-install OpenOffice - but although it has apparently installed - I can't find it.
I've resorted to installing Abiword so that I can read my text files in the mean time. What do I have to do?

if you run:

mkdir ~/oldoffice; mv ~/.openo* ~/oldoffice

Then rerun the app, is it ok?

Hi there,

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, I've been tied up on other matters.

Well, I did as you suggested. The directory ~/oldoffice was made ok but
the move failed because the ~/.openo* - not found.
Thanks for the help, however. I shall next trying to download OpenOffice
again.

Although Ubuntu Software Center reported that LibreOffice was installed - it didn't appear on the desktop application screen.
I therefore uninstalled it using the Ubuntu Software Center. I then installed it using Synaptic with the same result. It seems to have been installed but I can't find any way of accessing it. - it don't show up for work.
After uninstalling it - I've tried to install OpenOffice.org but it insists on installing LibreOffice instead - but without means of access.

Some progress - when clicking on a .odt file the following error message pops up.

LibreOffice 3.3 - Fatal Error
The application cannot be started.
LibreOffice user installation could not be processed due to missing access rights. Please make sure that you have sufficient access rights for the following location and restart LibreOffice:

/home/andy/.libreoffice/3

Try:

sudo mv ~/.libreoffice ~/.libreoffice_old

Then rerun an app from libreoffice

oo lal la! Thanks very much - you are a star! I followed your instructions to the letter. However, it didn't appear to work. So I closed down my pc and rebooted - and lo and behold - I have a working version of LibreOffice.

Once again, thanks for all your trouble.

you can run:

To clean up if you wish.
