Upgrade to v1.94.3?

Asked by Stefan Foulis

I'm on jammy and have an issue with libfprint that is supposedly fixed in v1.94.3, which was released a few days ago.

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/releases/v1.94.3

When do new releases usually get picked up?

The issue in my case is that the built-in fingerprint-reader on the framework laptop becomes unusable if there are already fingerprints stored in it from a previous installation (e.g linux or windows).

"When do new releases usually get picked up?"

Ubuntu is copying packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work), and also Debian has only libfprint version 1.94.2, with a notice that 1.94.3 is already available, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/libfprint

The "Debian import freeze" milestone for Ubuntu jammy is on February 24.
If Debian upgrade their package before that date, Ubuntu jammy should automatically inherit the new version. If it's later, then this requires special treatment (e.g. a freeze exception).

It may be possible to speed up the update in Debian by creating a bug report in the Debian system.
And of course you are also free to create a bug for libfprint on Ubuntu if there is an issue with the current version.

Now it is marked for auto-removal on https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/libfprint. That sounds scary 😱

Marked for autoremoval on 29 March: #1005425
high
Version 1:1.94.2-1 of libfprint is marked for autoremoval from testing on Tue 29 Mar 2022. It is affected by #1005425. The removal of libfprint will also cause the removal of (transitive) reverse dependencies: biometric-authentication, fprintd, ukui-biometric-manager. You should try to prevent the removal by fixing these RC bugs.

That's in the Debian bug tracker and does not automatically proliferate to Ubuntu.

If you want details about that, please ask Debian.
