mountewf on E01 file gives error

Usage log. I expected the mount to succeed:

    $ sudo ewfmount usb1.E01 /tmp/usb1
    [sudo] password for dale:
    ewfmount 20140608

    No sub system to mount EWF format.

Additional info:
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS
Release: 14.04

$ apt-cache policy ewf-tools
ewf-tools:

I suspect there is some configuration step I haven't taken, since the man page for ewfmount certainly implies I should be able to do this.
