Package libdigest-sha1-perl is missing from Precise Pangolin

Asked by James Cort

I need Digest/SHA1.pm. Being as this is provided by libdigest-sha1-perl (available in oneiric as well as upstream Debian Sid), I was going to install it directly from the Ubuntu repository:

$ sudo apt-get install libdigest-sha1-perl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package libdigest-sha1-perl

Checking in packages.ubuntu.com shows that there's nothing wrong with my installation; the package itself is entirely absent from 12.04 in its current form.

I think it should be present.

Report a bug. Precise is not ready and not stable so you may find things are missing but get added later

The functionality of this package is duplicated in libdigest-sha-perl, some software might need to be ported though.

Could we know what are the differences between libdigest-sha1-perl and libdigest-sha-perl or the reason of the rename ?

The rename (if it is just a rename) doesn't concern only the package name but also modules' name.
For example, SHA1.pm appears to be SHA.pm in this package.
This kind of change is not without consequences.

Regards.

Don't think it is a rename, I think libdigest-sha1-perl came first, then libdigest-sha-perl implemented it's features, but of course with a slightly different module name (and possibly slightly different API).

I just checked the deleted package reason off the servers to see why the package was missing in the first place.
