upstream less

Asked by Mike Jonkmans

Hi,

Please add the upstream for `less` to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/less

That will probably be : https://packages.debian.org/sid/less

From the README i gathered that it ultimately is: https://github.com/gwsw/less

Regards,
Mike Jonkmans

I am not sure if I correctly understand what you want.

On https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/less Debian indicates that the homepage for the less package is http://www.greenwoodsoftware.com/less/ (which is also mentioned in the README file) and this is what Ubuntu copies into its own packages.

If you deem the homepage information in Debian wrong, then please create a bug report in the Debian tracker. I assume that Ubuntu will follow any decision by Debian.

Yes, the Debian pages are more to the point.
Though they do not mention the github site, which is the preferred site for upstream regarding issues and development.
The http://www.greenwoodsoftware.com/less page only contains releases.

But the Ubuntu page is lacking. (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/less)
It should mention some Debian page as upstream.
Your tracker-page seems appropriate for that.

Where exactly do you miss the "upstream" information for the Ubuntu package?

Debian is some kind of "intermediate source" for almost all Ubuntu packages (including "less"), but Debian usually is not the real "upstream" source (for "less" it is either http://www.greenwoodsoftware.com/less/ or https://github.com/gwsw/less). Why do you think that it makes sense to change that to Debian in the Ubuntu package?

It is missing the upstream on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/less

Under "Upstream Connections" there is a list, with irrelevant suggestions,
and a button titled "Link to Upstream Project".

Ok, now I understand what you are referring to.

In my opinion the wording "Upstream Connections" is is easily misinterpreted.
The information there is not meant to link to the real upstream source, but only to a project page in launchpad, if that exists.

Example:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/git
has an "upstream connections" link to the project page on launchpad
https://launchpad.net/git
and there in turn is a link to the "homepage"
http://www.git-scm.com/

For "less" there is no launchpad project page, so it is not possible to add a link in "upstream connections" for it.

Why do you care?

I care(d) because I wanted to compare upstream source for lesspipe.

Without upstream info, searching in the README solved it.
But that will not always be the case.

It might be nice to add Debian's tracker page somewhere near "Upstream Connections".
