latex2rtf needs upgrading to latest (2007-11-20) version

Asked by pfaffman

What needs to happen to upgrade latex2rtf to the latest version? The newer version (1.9.19 2007-11-20). The current version in Ubuntu (and perhaps debian) is latex2rtf 1.9.16a (Sun Nov 7 19:02:39 2004).

The latest version has much better support for the apa style that I use. It compiled cleanly and installed just fine. I'd rather not keep my copy in ~/bin/ (but at this point, it's done, I suppose).

Thanks.

If you just want to use the new version of latex2rtf, your current solution, or upgrading Ubuntu are probably your best options.

The most recent release of Ubuntu is 8.10 (Intrepid) and it contains the new version of latex2rtf you mention. (You can check this on the packages site, but don't try to install software from here!):

I guess that you use Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)? I think upgrading your version of Ubuntu is likely to be the quickest and easiest method of installing the new, official version of latex2rtf. If you are wary of upgrading, or have a specific reason for avoiding an upgrade you might want to discuss this, perhaps by opening a new question. (It is always a good idea to make a backup of your data before doing an upgrade, and be sure to read all the upgrade instructions and release notes before you begin.)

Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

Official policy is that older releases of Ubuntu are not updated except to fix security issues, or very serious bugs. The reason for this is that even apparently minor changes to a piece of software can cause serious, unpredictable bugs elsewhere. Solving one person's bug could potentially cause new bugs for thousands of other people, so changes are kept to an absolute minimum.

There is however a mechanism to allow some updated software to be made available to people who choose to subscribe to it. There is no guarantee latex2rtf would be accepted for this, and it could take some time, but if you are interested in learning more about Ubuntu development processes you might want to investigate this option.

Good luck, and please let us know how you get on.
